A combination of the first warm Spring day, some inland tropical moisture, and an approaching front helped to spawn several mid to high level thunderstorms over Adelaide on the evening of the 20th. Temperatures during the day had reached 27C before some cloud cover began to drift down from the NW in a pre-frontal trough. By 5pm some isolated storms had begun to pop up in eastern and northern agricultural areas, but an hour or so later, with the help of some nocturnal cooling, storms started firing over the gulfs and headed towards Adelaide. At the time I was at my parents house at McLaren Vale, and had a reasonable view of the initial storm to go over the city. Soon after another storm went just south of us. By 8pm we had to leave for home, but as we did, a new line of storms was heading across the gulf in our direction. Some very impressive Cgs were observed out to sea on the way home. This line of storms passed over the whole metro area giving everyone some sort of impressive light show. Many ASWA members and others succeeded in getting a spectacular image or two! The first image below is the best shot I got. It was actually a flang, hitting probably less than a kilometre up the road. Also below is samples of other ASWA members photos with links to their work.
