The 1970s was generally a pretty miserable decade for psychedelic music. Progressive rock (aka prog-rock) was often typified by its lyrical pretence and bombastic excess. In Germany the Krautrockers kept the psych flame burning for awhile, before finally morphing into arty electronica. A handful of art rock practitioners would occasionally turn out something relatively listenable and, at times, the odd mainstream artist flew close to a psych groove. Of course, there were still a few eccentrics about just to keep things interesting. By the end of the decade the punk rebellion included a small number of artists with clearly identifiable psych influences. The first 30 albums here would sit nicely in any psych collection. The rest may hold some interest for the historically inclined.
