A steady stream of critical plaudits helps Jackie Ryan break free of the pack and earn chart-topping success.
You and the Night and the Music is a near-perfect pure vocal jazz album. Ryan's third OpenArt recording runs the gamut from sultry to sassy with some smoky swing in between as she roller-coasts the highs and lows of true romance.
With sax legend Red Holloway providing tenor magic on five of the 14 tracks Ryan opts for a delightfully straightahead approach, with 'Bésame Mucho' a sole reminder of her smoother Latino side. Versatile pianist Tamir Hendelman is never too far from the action, occasionally complemented by fine cameos from guitarist Larry Koonse. This quality set is certain to elevate Ryan into the upper echelons of female vocal jazz stardom.
