The love affair between modern listeners and the masters of classic jazz continues unabated.

The remarkable success of this record largely hinges on the fact that sax supremo John Coltrane's short stint with the Thelonious Monk Quartet was frustratingly under-recorded. As luck would have it, these 1957 Voice of America radio tapes were recently discovered during a routine digital transfer of Library of Congress recordings.

Far too many recently released live recordings of jazz masters simply exploit listeners starved for "new" music from their idols. In this case, however, pristine sound quality combined with the moment in time when eccentric pianist Monk and Coltrane finally clicked makes for a recording that is well worth checking out.
