The most acclaimed jazz album of 2006 finds a legendary master still at the top of his freeform game.

When alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman released
The Shape of Jazz to Come in 1959 he began a musical revolution. Almost a half-century later and this album recorded live in Germany proves he is still without peer in the world of free jazz.

Much of the adventure on
Sound Grammar comes courtesy of Coleman's two-bass (Gregory Cohen and Tony Falanga) quartet - not quite as radical as having two full quartets playing at the same time as he did on 1960's Free Jazz, but more than enough to provide plenty of room to explore. Coleman's son Denardo rounds out the group on drums. Aside from the two reinterpretations of Coleman classics all of the songs here are new.
