Saving his best 'til last, tenor Michael Brecker teams with an all-star lineup for an epitaph fit to frame.
Despite dying of a rare blood marrow disease Brecker pulled out all the stops to produce his defining jazz moment. It is a fiery blowing session completely devoid of any wallowing that one might expect given the unfortunate circumstances.
Joined by pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, guitarist Pat Metheny, and the Jack DeJohnette/John Patitucci rhythm section - Brecker delivers an all-original set that will be hard to beat as 2007's best. Spending most of his solo career in smooth jazz territory, Brecker also has a handful of genuine modern jazz gems to his credit. Time will tell, but this just might edge out his superb 1986 self-titled debut as Brecker's crowning achievement.
