Kim Turner

I was born on the 9th March (apparently I am a typical Pisces, never sure if this is good or bad?!) in the seventies to a Scottish mother and an Australian father, in Toronto, Canada. I have one wee brother. We came to live in Aus when I was about five. I was encouraged to read as a child (Mum is the world's greatest bibliophile!), and I read anything I could (can) get my hands on. I love Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (especially Through The Looking Glass, "And can all the flowers talk?"), The Water Babies, The Narnia Chronicles, Neverending Story, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings - all of which I had read at least once by twelve or thirteen. Coupled with films like The Goonies, Gremlins, Beetlejuice, The Princess Bride (Wesley and his "As you wish..."...sigh...), The Dark Crystal, Legend, Labyrinth, Dracula, Blade Runner, LadyHawke, Edward Scissorhands - oh! well you get the picture! : ) Along with music by Kate Bush and David Bowie…

My greatest inspiration is John William Waterhouse! Sigh...He is my favourite artist ever, and I was lucky enough to see some of his work in the Tate Gallery; the paintings are so much more incredibly, breath-takingly beautiful than the images you see of his as prints and calenders. The depth and detail in them are simply amazing.

For 'fabulousness', he is followed very closely by Bougereau...along with most of the Pre Raphaelites and many of the illustrators of the early nineteenth century - of course Arthur Rackham, CM Barker, Kaye Neilsen, Dulac, HJ Ford, Ida Rentoul, John Bauer - the list goes on and on!

Modern day master illustrators (or faerie godfathers...) such as Alan Lee and Brian Froud can never be far from any faery/fantasy artist's mind! Their works are inviting, amazing and inspiring and like the artists of the nineteenth century, they have woven their unique stamp into the genre (they are the modern day Arthur Rackhams) and have greatly inspired a new generation of faerie artists.
I think there are people who saw Labyrinth and 'got it' and those who didn't...(Ditto The Dark Crystal) I have many little, and not so little, converts who at the drop of a hat, can now sing all the words to "You remind me of the babe, which babe..." ...(One of my favourite scenes from the movie - hmmm... quite possibly because it features David Bowie in his grey tights! = O )

Artist Statement
One of my greatest memories is of one of my aunts who had an elaborate faerie palace at the back of her garden, complete with little roads leading here and there; she told me that she always saw the faeries flying in and out ("Look! There goes one, there goes one"!) and I couldn't believe how lucky she was. I wanted to see them for myself - to know what they really looked like. I could never wait to get to her house to see if I could see one...Despite all of my efforts, I never did see a faerie in her garden. I think these memories are the biggest inspiration for why I draw faeries - it is to try to recapture that feeling of amazement, awe and unquestioning belief that such creatures could exist. I think I have made up for it since, for now they are all I see!! I am forever looking at people and imagining what sort of faerie they would be, or what they would look like as some sort of faerie creature...
