The Vacuum Oil Company holds the honour of being the earliest established oil company (1895) in Australia. Prior to this other brands of oil based products were marketed by overseas companies through their Australian agents. Plume benzine, introduced in 1916, became a household word, as did ethyl (super) after 1934. Vacuum replaced the famous Plume brand name with Mobilgas in 1954. Prominent on the red pumps was the Pegasus (flying horse).
