My '61 EK Holden Special |
|---|
"The Blue Lady", EK13628S & E/N b210708 was registered on the 2nd August 1961 in Armidale, NSW. It was sold through Hardmans, the local Holden dealer in the area, and still retains the dealer badge on its rump. The original colours of Snow Crest White over Strata Blue are untouched except for the odd stone chips which have been painted over. The original crayon writing describing the colour of the body can still be seen under the colour top coat, on the body work behind the front grill.
The original owner, Mr. Tom Morrisey, lived in Kelly Plains Rd. and stored his precious car in a wooden garage on wooden stumps, 4 ft. off the ground . A regular weekly washing of the exterior of the vehicle was observed as well as an underside and wheel arch treatment. He kept an old galvanised bucket aside especially for the occasion. The interior is mint, expected of a vehicle which rarely saw the harsh Aussie sun. It was obviously a much loved car and was treated accordingly.
Tom Morrisey died, aged 83 and the family decided to sell the vehicle to a local who would look after it. Enter Trevor Gibson from Walcha, who purchased the EK with 12,000 miles on the clock. I subsequently purchased the car in January this year, with a clock reading of 79,000 miles.
The car was originally fitted with the optional oil filter, Coolaride sunvisor, rear wheel spats, rear venetians, Diamond Dot radio, factory heater, headlight protectors, bonnet adornment, mud flaps and NASCO steering lock. During Trevor's long association with the Blue Lady, he added many NASCO accessories - wheel trim rings, glove box light, hand rail, rear picnic table, parcel shelf, locking petrol cap, genuine blue topped drivers side weathershield, vanity mirror, day/night mirror, scratch plates, pull-to handles, Holden number plate frames, fender wind splits, rare windscreen washers and a superb blue pearled steering wheel. The Coker white walled tyres really put the finishing touch to the car. They look so good that I have ordered another set for the EH from Antique Tyres.
Along with all these goodies came all books, brochures, Good Houskeeping booklet and mint work shop manual. Unfortunately, the original NSW plates had to be surrendered, so 'true to period' QLD black 'n white plates were obtained for registration in Queensland. They actually came off a April 1961 registered EK Special sedan owned by my father-in-law, which was written off late 1962.
