A long time back I built a hand held optical tacho to test the rpm of model aircraft engines. It was designed to be aimed at the propeller so that the blades shadow the sensor, an LDR (light detecting resistor). It proved to be reasonably accurate for an analogue device, and I still use it today. I have since built a version that uses a multimeter for the display. Go to Simple Analogue Optical Tacho Pages
