The Designer

This website and all the electronic devices shown here were designed by

Ian W.  Armstrong

Assoc. Dip. of Mech. Eng. with Distinction

Assoc. Dip. of Electrical & Electronic Eng. with Credit.

I have been involved in some sort of design for most of my life. If I wanted something that was out of my budget, I would simply build it if I thought I could. That is why I race a scratch built 1/10 scale touring car, on which only the shock absorbers and motor were purchased. I find much greater pleasure in seeing the final product perform than in actually racing. The same with flying. I have only ever purchased one model. All others were scratch built, some including the motors.

Grew up on a farm, went to university, dropped out, did a Fitting & Machining apprenticeship, received awards, worked in a general Engineering shop for 16 years, achieved 2 Associate Diplomas by correspondence, worked in a factory designing and building new equipment, worked as a Mechanical Designer/CAD Draughtsman, and now, due to retrenchment, am forced to work as a Fitter/Machinist again. There aren't many opportunities outside the cities in country Australia, so I keep myself busy with this hobby.

Some file photos follow.

Two Dryers Heat pump/Microwave that dried mangoes in Nth Queensland. I was responsible for all mechanical and some electrical design including all draughting

Scratch built and designed 025 powered plane and geared  060 motor

Two PLC controlled millet broom making machines. The two machines could do the work of 4 skilled human labourers, with only 1 unskilled operator. Completely designed, built and programmed by myself, Original left, quicker updated version right.

22cc 3speed auto pushbike and some of the machined components.

Purpose built borer, mechanical design and draughting
