Little Johnny is fond of telling us what a good Christian he is ... so here's a hymn written especially for him.

Immortal Invisible

by Peter Hicks and Geoff Francis

The tune is that of the old hymn, Immortal, invisible, god only wise..

Immortal, invisible God only wise,
You gave us market forces to rule over our lives,
Yet our minds are so feeble, so unworthy of you,
That we need economic rationalists to interpret your truth.

Unemployment and poverty are the price we must pay
For like poor helpless lost sheep from your path we have strayed,
But such is the mercy that flows from your hands,
That you've sent us your apostles to deliver this land.

Archbishop Costello knows what must be done,
Each public institution must be bled, one by one,
For through blood comes redemption as the righteous do know,
And it helps corporate dividends and profits to grow.

High priestess Amanda wields a long butcher's knife,
The first born of each household must be sacrificed,
To extinguish your anger and to save us from hell,
And for her own satisfaction she wants the others as well.

Resplendent in his cassock there stands Peter Reith,
He has just been anointed Witchfinder in Chief,
All dissent must be stamped out for purity's sake,
And all trade union heretics be burnt at the stake.

Pope Pious Johnny keeps his head out of sight,
On his hands and his knees he prays each day and night,
"Let them blame it all on Vanstone, on Costello and Reith,
"But I beg you, Lord Jesus, let them never blame me."
