The spider arms of Sulawesi are each a world to themselves. They are witness to the volcanic origins of the arc of islands around the western pacific, stretching from Japan, through the Philippines to the Indonesia. The northern tip of Sulawesi lies just out of sight of the southernmost Philippine islands. The eastern arms of the spider reach out toward coral gardens out in the remote reaches of the high seas, and around the shore are myriads of small islands each with its own coral universe. Steep volcanic spines covered in jungle are interspersed by small villages, either fishing from tiny bays or farming rice and bamboo and coffee on deep rich volcanic soils. |
