Please find below some answers to commonly asked questions.
How many days notice must we give to the celebrant?
31 days notice must be given to the celebrant throughout Australia, of an intention to marry. It is possible to shorten the time, but special permission must be granted from a court.
What do we need to bring to an interview?
When the celebrant interviews the couple, they provide their birth certificates, and if either party has been married before, they provide the copy of their decree of absolute. In the event of a birth certificate not being available, a passport is sufficient. Advice can be given to enable you to obtain a copy of the necessary documents.
If I marry someone who is living in another country, does that mean my new partner now becomes an Australian citizen, and can live in Australia?
When a person from another country marries an Australian citizen it does not guarantee permanent residency in this country. All applications for residency, must be handled by the Department of Immigration.
Who helps me with the actual ceremony?
The marriage celebrant will give you some samples of wedding ceremonies, for you to use as a guide for your own. You may use part or all of any of the ceremonies to make it as personal as you like.
Is there anything I have to include by law, into my wedding ceremony?
Yes, there are some words the celebrant has to include in the wedding ceremony, and I will help you with this.
Is there anything else I need to know about my wedding?
Advice on other technicalities will be provided at the interview where the "Notice of Intention to Marry" form, is completed, or by email at the time of booking.
Do we need a rehearsal?
Before the wedding, parties are provided with information to ensure that on their special day, everything is taken care of and they are not in doubt on any issue. Sometimes, a rehearsal is advisable, and where this is so, the rehearsal is conducted usually three days before the wedding, with all parties directly involved, including the celebrant present. A rehearsal, particularly when there are large wedding parties, is a very good idea.
Can a Civil Marriage Celebrant marry us in a church?
Yes, but it requires the permission of the church owner. Sometimes the owner is a religion but many churches are in private ownership.
