DAINTREE BIRDWATCHING TOURS

with Chris Dahlberg

Our birdwatching tour takes place at dawn and lasts for 2 hours. We depart from the Daintree Village jetty which is in the freshwater parts of the Daintree River. It is central to the varied habitats of the Daintree Valley.

Daintree near Port Douglas and Cairns, North Queensland, Australia has become well known for birdwatching tours. Chris Dahlberg's Daintree River tours have been operating since July 1992 catering for visiting birdwatchers providing birdwatching that land based tour operators cannot do well.

We are a 90 minute drive from Cairns 45 minutes from Port Douglas and 55 minutes from Kingfisher Park.

The beauty of using a boat is that a small group can go, in seated comfort, and glide up to within metres of a lot of birds without disturbing them giving the best possible and the most memorable view of all. We regularly cover a 5 kilometre stretch of the river and creeks in just 2 hours.
You can judge for your self by looking at photos taken from the boat:

The scientific name for this area is Queensland's Wet Tropics, Australia, reflecting the annual 3 metre rainfall but Tropical North Queensland has become the tourist name. We close for the wettest part of the year, February and March, but we still go out even if there is a little rain about. We would not be very good operators if we didn't go after you have travelled all this way to be here. It is wise to pack a raincoat. Other wildlife in the wild seen regularly includes reptiles, especially in the cooler months. Saltwater Crocodiles, Green Tree Snakes, Eastern Water Dragons and Amethystine Pythons are the most common. The only mammal regularly seen is the Spectacled Flying-fox or fruit bat.

The other World Heritage listed property in the regions is, of course, the Great Barrier Reef the only living thing to be seen from outer space. Daily boat tours from Cairns, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation service this need. Access for tropical rainforest walks is limited to the Mossman Gorge on the south side of the river with some more walks that lead from the Cape Tribulation road north of the river.

This photo taken by Frank Biesboer from the Netherlands on 18 Aug 2006 shows how calm it can be at dawn making for ideal birdwatching conditions. Even an un-trained eye will go to movement and if there is no wind any movement is most likely caused by a bird.
