Life

Every man of us has all the centuries in him,
though their operations be latent,
dim, and very various.
Viscount John Morley

The Scenery of Life

The appearance of all Life on Earth has to be maintained in the manner described in the previous page, "Creation".   Wherever it has been destroyed, the original desert and wastelands come back into focus.   It is no easy task to restore it.   It cannot be done with the click of a button.   First, it has to be reprogrammed into the minds and senses of fauna, and flora, using a logic that all life can understand and accept.   This means reclaiming the desert piece by piece, and reforestation where the land is still fertile.   Only in this manner, will living minds accept and store once more, the return of a living background of fields, bush, trees, and plants.

Why are we here?

I cannot argue in any way with the accepted view, that each of our many lives, whether on Earth or elsewhere, is to learn.   Even the most dogmatic of doctrines teach that we live our life to improve ourselves spiritually.   The only difference being that those religions who once believed in reincarnation and then rejected it, decided to promise us one life and one chance only to get to Heaven.   The idea being that this would keep the faithful in line.   You either went along with it or suffered the consequences, such as being burned to death as a heretic, and then condemned to eternal damnation.

Fortunately, we are never given up as lost by our Creator.   We can and do come back, time after time, until we prove ourselves.   In a way it is like the film story, "Ground Hog Day", where the main character wakes up each morning to the same day.   He tries tackling each situation differently, but to no avail.   Each new day is Ground Hog Day again.   He cannot escape the sequence until he gets everything right.

How to live our lives.

The following two quotations sum up two of the choices that we all have.

The great business of life is,
to be,
to do,
to do without,
and to depart.
Viscount John Morley
For when the One Great Scorer
comes to write against your name,
He marks - not that you won or lost -
but how you played the game.

It matters of course what you do in life, but it is so important that you always do the right thing by everyone, as well as yourself.   Even so the final goal, them Pearly Gates, is still far far away, on the Spiritual Ladder.   I can only proffer a few pointers.   If I knew them all, I wouldn't be here.   Everyone is conscious of the cardinal virtues, but how often do we put them into practice?   I don't think the order matters, just keep these words in mind, Love, Forgiveness, Tolerance, Open Mindedness, Charity, and Knowledge.

So whatever happened to Faith and Hope.   Well if you have Faith you don't need hope, and Faith like Trust is all a part of Love.   It isn't just holding a belief in God, for God is everywhere, and within ourselves.   With a true and sincere Love for All you already have faith in God.   "Know Thyself" was the main tenet of the Ancient Greek Mysteries.   The earliest christians were known as Gnostics because they maintained this credence.

If all the good people were clever,
And all the clever people were good,
The World would be nicer than ever
We thought that it possibly could.

Reviewing Your Life

Take a little time out each week to go over how you played your game during the previous seven days.   Is there anything sitting there on your mind?    Think about other people's reactions to anything you might have said.   You may not have noticed consciously that you have hurt someone's feelings, and tossing things over should bring it to the surface.   Whether it is something you have said or done, it is not to late, to make amends and put it right.

Why Bother?

You might be quite happy with yourself, and never understand that you are doing anything wrong.   Take note of what other people are telling you.   Never cut them off, because you are sure that you are right and they are wrong.   We all see things in a different light.   This is because the computers, or bodies if you like, that we inhabit vary from one model to another.   For example everyone knows that the opposite sex will always argue from a different viewpoint.

Whereas a real computer starts out identical to any other computer of the same make and model, it can change in the way it operates, when new soft ware is downloaded on to the hard drive, and so develope a unique identity and memory.    With human beings, genetic codes produce a singular person from the word go.    Once the driver, the soul, takes over, virtues developed over millenia influence that person's outlook, and then it is shaped again with the addition of new programmes, otherwise known as lessons, taken on board at school.

The only way to reach any agreement or understanding with someone else, is to try and understand their viewpoint, and then see what common ground you have.   Intolerance of other creeds, has in the past turned people into monsters.   Fortunately, the last two centuries have brought great changes, and most people now reach across religious boundaries to welcome and respect not only those who worship God in their own way, but also those who hold no belief in any deity.   It will therefore come as some surprise to learn that the latter may well progress spiritually faster than those who have led a faultless life and have ever held a firm faith in God.

Despite the claims of many sects, our Creator does not favour one above all others.   The half way house between Earth and Heaven, is full of lost souls, stuck in limbo if you like, because they cannot find their way.   They listened and believed in hollow promises of salvation.   They lived their lives looking down with pity or contempt on anyone who didn't agree with their narrow doctrine.   By all means attend Church, Synagogue, or Temple, and join in their fellowship.   But be wary of any threats of eternal damnation should one stray from the fold.

Listen to every sermon, and every lecture, and learn from them with your own mind.   Weigh up every word on the scales of your own experience.   After all, you do not believe everything any politican says without due thought, and consideration.

This is why one should bother

ABOU BEN ADHEM (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
"What writest thou?" - The vision raised its head,
And, with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."

"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay not so,"
Replied the angel. - Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow-men."
The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again, with a great awakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed, -
And, lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.
Leigh Hunt
