Day 8 - Sentosa Island - 24th April 1998

Sentosa, Isle of Peace and Tranquility.  It conjures up visions of of sparkling beaches, tropical palms and aquamarine waters.  But its history is of a rather more morbid nature. Formerly called the Island Behind the Dead or Blakang Mati, Sentosa until twenty years ago, was the bastion of the British Military Forces until their withdrawal in 1971.  Barrack like buildings and a somber fort stand in silent testimony to the island's former function but the buildings are now holiday bungalows.  Fort Siloso is now a tourist attraction.

This sun soaked island already has hotels, restaurants, swimming pool, discotheque, man made lagoons, chalet, squach and tennis courts, bicycle tracks, skating rink, 18 hole golf course, swimming beaches and a 5.6km monorail that traverses the island.  Some of the attractions are an Asian Village, Butterfly Park, Musical Fountains, The Surrender Chamber museum, Underwater World, and Wax museum.

To get there we traveled on the MRT rail system , a bus and the Cable car from the World Trade Centre.    We bought two day tickets that gave entry to most of the attractions for $47sg.  The island is well worth visiting and the musical fountains display at night with laser lights and colored lighting is fantastic.
