Day 3 -   Port Klang - 20th April 1998

Port Klang is the seaport for Kuala Lumpur  the capital of Malaysia.  The ship docked at its new Superstar Cruise Centre which was still being built.  A surprise for us the previous evening was the receiving of complimentary tickets for all bus tours arranged during the cruise.  Something we didn't expect and I calculate would save us about $500 in tour tickets.  Our tour was arranged to take us into K.L.  and show us some of the cultural aspects of the city.  We were ushered on to our bus and  settled in for a long ride.  The city was about 60 kms away.  The tour guide spent the next hour telling us of the virtues of Malaysia and its customs and how well the country was doing  in the economic sense.

Protons and  Petronas  feature big time in all his talks.  Petronas is the large oil
company that was  building the Petronas Twins Towers, the largest building in the world.  The Proton was Malaysia's answer to the small vehicle industry.  Its about the size of a  Holden Berina.  I've seen them for sale in Australia since we came back , but nothing amazing.

We visited the Telecom Tower and took a trip to the top where there was an
observation deck.  From here we could see the Twin Towers and some of K. L.  Most of  the city was covered by smoke haze from Borneo.  We also went to the Blue Mosque the main feature of K.L.  As we stepped out of our bus  the Imans were calling the faithful to prayers.  The loudspeakers  sent their message right across the city.

We had a quick lunch at the McDonalds shop in the Telecom Tower before
proceeding to the next point of interest , a Chinese Temple set on a hill overlooking the city.

We took off our shoes and looked inside, lit a few doss sticks and smoked the place out.  We did the ritual thing and shook the fortune sticks until one popped up with a number on it.  You then had to go to a set of little drawers and open the one which corresponded with the number on the stick.  Inside was a small piece of paper which showed your good fortune.

Soon we were on our way back to the ship which was sailing at 7pm.  On the way back our guide talked about the monarchy and the way the Sultans organise themselves.  All very interesting but everyone fell asleep listening to his monotonous drone.  We both went to the pool deck  when we got back onboard and had a nice spa and swim in the pool.  That evening as the ship left port we had dinner in the main dining room with a couple from Perth.   We retired that night very tired, with our memories of K.L.
