Background to the Traditional art

These symbols are used by Christians in Central Australia, including Tennant Creek. Some people, who use different symbols in their art work, have commented that the pictures "speak to them".

The "Christian" story using this art form was developed by the Australian Baptist Mission(AMBS), in consultation with Walpiri Elders. Jerry Jangala Patrick from Lajamanu had a leading role in developing this Christian art style. Careful attention was given as to which symbols to use so as not to give offense to anyone.

The painting behind Jerry depicts the Bible speaking to all people and to all aspects of life. It hangs in the Lajamanu Baptist Church building.
